There is soiling and some chipping to paper covers. This copy was the personal copy of George M. Ottinger, and is signed by him. Ottinger was born in 1833 and spent his early years in Pennsylvania and New York. At the age of 16, he ran away and joined the crew of a whaling ship, and by the age of 20 had traveled around the world. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1861 and emigrated to Utah. He became the first art instructor at the University of Deseret and later president of the Deseret Academy in 1863. He was the first fire chief in Salt Lake City. As well as being a prolific artist, he for a time partnered with C.R. Savage in his photography business. Ottinger is one of the most prominent 19th-century Utah artists. He is noted for his landscape and historical scene paintings. $30.00

Large Heavy paper covers, with beautiful watercolor illustration on front cover by the poetess and artist. The front hinge is pulling away slightly from the text block and there are a couple of the initial pages loosening, but still attached to the binding. Text block is sound. Some pages are uncut at the top. This large book contains poems and 11 beautiful watercolor illustrations by the author. The pages are heavy stock. A beautiful book. Measures 15 inches tall by just over 11 inches wide. $100.00

29. Morton, Frederick W.-editor. BRUSH AND PENCIL. AN ILLUSTRATED MAGAZINE OF THE ARTS OF TODAY. Volumes 14 and 15 complete and bound together.. Chicago & New York: Brush & Pencil Publishing Company, 1904. This is volumes 14 and 15 complete of this periodical bound together. Bound in beautiful 3/4 red leather, with red leather spine and corners and raised leather bands on the spine. There is shelf wear to the edges of the spine and corners, with the corners slightly rubbed. Slight soiling to the covers and a few rubbed spots to the leather at the joints. The binding is tight and the contents are clean and tightly bound. Volume 14 is complete in five issues, dated from April 1904 through December 1904. Volume 15 is complete in six issues, dated from January 1905 through June 1905. There are also five additional issues at the end of the book entitled "Bulletin and Record, Art News Section of Brush and Pencil". These are dated from January 1905 through June 1905. These issues are very scarce, and individual issues are prized on the used book market. This volume containing 11 issues and to complete year of the periodical is especially desirable. Numerous illustrations and information about artwork past and current, auctions and prices, and information about artists. $325.00
