13. Webster, Noah. AN
IMPROVED GRAMMAR OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. New
Haven, Connecituct, Hezekiah Howe: 1831. First revised. 180 pages. First revised
edition. Heavy shelf wear and rubbing to spine and corners. Original tan
calfskin binding shows scuffs and some soiling. Front board is a bit bowed
outward. Some soiling and staining to the endpapers and there are some
dampstains and foxing to pages. Binding is tight. An important early American
grammar book. This copy has a notation that reads "Chester Dutton from the
author". It is not in the hand of Noah Webster, but in Chester Dutton's
hand. Dutton was a colleague of Webster at Yale University in the 1830's and was
undoubtedly given this book by Webster. I have some paperwork tracing Dutton to
Yale during Webster's time at Yale that I will include with the book upon its
sale. $225.00
