23. Gilliss, J.M. The US Naval Astronomical Expedition to the Southern Hemisphere, During the Years 1849-50-51-52. Volumes I (1) and II (2). Philadelphia: J. D. Lippincott, 1855. This is volumes I and II. Original light brown cloth bindings. Ax-library ink marks on the spines. There is wear and rubbing to the edges of the spines and corners, with some discoloration and a few scuffed marks to the binding. Corners are rubbed through and slightly bumped. The hinges are tight and the text blocks are sound. Overall quite a solid set. This set has former ownership bookplate of the Salt Lake Temple Library Fund from the 1890's. There is also a former bookplate and ink stamp for the LDS Church Historian's Office, with a stamp that says "cancelled" across the bookplate. This set is collated and complete, with the three folding maps,  the fold-out panoramic view, and all of the plates. A beautiful and important South American exploration work. $250.00
