111. Hayden, Ferdinand V. & Andrew Joseph Russell. Sun Pictures of Rocky Mountain Scenery, With a Description of the Geographical and Geological Features, and Some Account of the Resources of the Great West; Containing Thirty Photographic Views Along the Line of the Pacific Rail Road, Omaha to Sacramento. New York: Julius Bien, 1870. 150 pages. Bound in the original 3/4 green Morrocan leather over green cloth, with the front and back boards expertly reattached. There is also a small amount of leather replacement on the edges of the spine by the same expert restorationist. A beautifully preserved binding, with raised bands and decorated panels on the spine. The first blank endpage has an ink inscription that says "From the estate of General M.I. Dudington September 1919". The original marbled endpapers and paste-downs are present, with a some rubbing to the inside edge of the front endpaper. The binding is tight and the contents are collated and complete. There is a small library ink stamp at the bottom of the title page that says "released by the library". There is also a small spot at the top of the title page with the paper is thinned and an owner's name has been rubbed out. No other ex-library marks or evidences. The portion of the text block between the text and the beginning of the photographic plates has what at first glance appears to be a separation, or crack, but there is nothing loose or unstable about the binding at that point. The photographic plate pages have some rippling vertically, which is a common occurrence with the heavy paper and mounted albumen prints. The 30 photographic prints were originally issued in larger format by A.J. Russell in an 1869 publication entitled "The Great West Illustrated", which is exceedingly rare. Some of the photographs are faded a bit in contrast and the Mormon Tabernacle photograph has a small line of fading along the extreme left side. This work is one of the monumental early visual publications of the American West. It is on a par with any photographic and illustrated imprint for the time. For collectors of Mormon history, this book has wonderful photos of Coalville, Great Salt Lake City and Echo Canyon, as well as the Tabernacle photo. Sixteen of the photographs are of Utah subjects. The work could be compared with Piercy and Linforth's "Route From Liverpool to Great Salt Lake" (1855) in its historical importance and precedent. I have numerous photos of the plates and binding. If you are interested, please contact me and I can send you the images. $9500.00
