186. Daniels, William M. A CORRECT ACCOUNT OF THE MURDER OF GENERALS JOSEPH AND HYRUM SMITH, AT CARTHAGE, ON THE 27TH DAY OF JUNE, 1844. By William M. Daniels, An Eye-Witness. Nauvoo, Illinois: John Taylor, 1845. 24 pages. Flake 2658. Crawley 261. This is the original 1845 publication. This is a disbound pamphlet. The title page is missing and is supplied in facsimile. The contents are complete. The pages are clean. A few of the pages have creases to the paper at the bottom right corner. This account was actually written by Lyman O. Littlefield, based on accounts given him by William M. Daniels. According to Crawley, Daniels was with the anti-Mormons 10 days before the assassination of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, and remained with them for reasons not satisfactorily explained by him. Seven days later he swore out of affidavit outlining the things that he had seen. The pamphlet includes two woodcut illustrations of the interior and exterior of the Carthage Jail. Daniels' pamphlet includes a reference to a flash of light dispersing the mob after the murders, but this was most likely an embellishment by Littlefield. A fabulous rarity. Together with a Geographical and Historical Description of Utah, and a Map of the Overland Routes to That Territory from the Missouri River. Liverpool & London: Franklin D. Richards & Latter-Day Saints' Book Depot, 1855. 120 pages. 1855 first edition. Rebound in modern beautiful 3/4 blue leather, with raised bands on the spine. Complete with all plates and the folding map. The map is not hand-colored, as some were. The plate for Joseph & Hyrum Smith is loose within the book. The plates have some dampstaining to the upper right edges, moreso towards the back of the back. On only a few plates does the dampstain effect the edge of the image. This copy was once an ex-library before being rebound. It has old library perforation stamps on the title page and on all of the plates at the top. A few scattered text pages also have the perforation. This copy is especially interesting in that it was a presentation copy from famed Mormon photographer Charles R. Savage to his son Ralph Marsh Savage. There is a three-line inscription which reads "Bought from Brigham Young's store by C.R. Savage when George Teasdale was his clerk. Presented to my son Ralph Marsh March 18, 1908 by C.R. Savage." The description is written in the hand of Charles R. Savage. This is one of the landmark illustrated books in the history of Mormonism and the American West. Piercy's detailed steel-engraved plates are a valuable historical visual record of the Mormon Trail and early Utah. This book is always prized by collectors in the Mormon, Western Americana, and Americana fields. It is rare and difficult to find complete. Not many copies were produced or sold when it was first published, so it is a significant rarity today. Flake 6381. $12500.00
